Abstract

The most important function of language is a means of communication. English as one of the international languages of the world is also needed in education field. Many books are written in English so that many people want to understand the language. In order to understand it, people need to translate the foreign language into their mother tongue. As a result, some people did the translation studies. Most of their studies emphasize on the translation product without paying attention to the process. This study is qualitative study. The writer used qualitative study which examined and described what students were doing during the translation process. It is not easy to know what the students thought while the process of translating. In order to know it, the writer used Think Aloud method where the subjects were asked to verbalize whatever came to their mind when doing the task and it was recorded. Then the writer transcribed, categorized it based on the checklist, gave codes and comment. As a result, translation is not always a linear process which is following the translation process such as understanding, transferring, and restructuring. In addition, not all of the translation processes were used by the subjects and it usually repeats again.
