Abstract

In the previous research, PIMS Program, it has been proved that the strategic elements, either as a whole or separate parts had affected the company performance. The strategic elements covered new product introduction, distribution channel, supplier concentration, product policy, marketing expenses, R&D expenses, vertical integration, and pricing policy. The performance related to ROE, and ROA. Its objective was to figure out a general principle of the strategic elements which can be applied in all industries. Various industries were analyzed at the same time. The weakness of PIMS was the treatment of diverse firms of various industries, which basically had different characteristics, as being of same population. Furthermore the SBU was used as a level of analysis without acknowledging any synergies that SBUs within a firm might have. As a result, the conclusion obtained was usually overestimated or underestimated. This research tries to empirically criticize the previous research, without repeating the same mistake. The strategic elements covered are new product introduction, distribution channel, supplier concentration, product policy, marketing expenses, and R&D expenses. The objective of this research is just to give reasonableness of some issues without arguing against the theoretical concept. The main question is whether these strategic elements, either as a whole or separate parts, affect the performance of public-listed manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The statistical analysis used in this research is multiple linear regression using SPSS 15.0. The results show that the strategic elements, as a whole significantly affect the company performance. By noting that the adjusted multiple coefficient of determination is high: adjusted R = 0.925 (ROE); 0.943 (ROA); and 0.967 (Jensen's Alpha), it is further confirmed that the combination of the six strategic elements explains 92.5%, 94.3%, and 96.7% of the variation in ROE, ROA, and Jensen's Alpha of the public-listed manufacturing companies in Indonesia. However, tests for the significance of individual regression parameters show various results. On ROE, all strategic elements, but supplier concentration, significantly have influence. On ROA, only product policy and R&D expenses significantly have influence. Meanwhile, product policy, distribution channel, and marketing expenses significantly affect Jensen's Alpha. Thus, these findings, on the one hand, are consistent with the previous research when it comes to the effect of the combination of the six strategic elements, on the other, are not consistent when it comes to the effect of the individual element.
