Abstract

One of the problems of learning English is the lacking of vocabulary. It happened to the students in Gloria Christian Elementary School II. They frequently got unsatisfactory score. It was because of the limited numbers of learning resources. Textbooks are still taking the role. Many of textbooks were designed and developed without considering the needs of the school. It made some students, sometimes, difficult to comprehend the materials. Based on the fact, improvement of the way of learning vocabulary is needed. Making and developing an alternative learning resource that can make the students feel at ease to comprehend the materials. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL software) is one of the ways to solve the learning problem. The purpose of this development is to produce CALL software for vocabulary learning for the second year students of elementary schools. The components and design are made in a way that can motivate the students to learn more vocabularies. The procedures of the development are (1) setting the topic to be developed (through needs assessment), (2) identifying the syllabus, (3) developing CALL software, (4) producing CALL software, (5) arranging documentation, (6) trying the product, and (7) revising the product. This product had been tested to the expert of software design, the expert of computer, and the expert of English. The results of experts’ evaluation were used as a basis of revision. Besides, this product had been tested to the students. Three students were in the first try out (one to one evaluation). Six students were in the second try out (small group evaluation). Twenty four students were in the third try out (field evaluation). All the results of first, second and third evaluation were used as the basis of revision. The subjects were the second year students of Gloria Christian Elementary School II. The result of the product try out showed that (1) in general, the teachers were satisfied with the development of CALL software through all the components, either gaining attention material, pre-test, explanation, exercises, post-test, and games. (2) evaluation of 33 students showed that the software is motivating, attracting and easy to use. The conclusion is this CALL software has a good quality. The students are motivated to learn vocabulary using this software. It means that this CALL software is appropriate to use as an alternative vocabulary learning resource at Gloria Christian Elementary School II.
