Abstract
The objectives of this research were to find out the techniques used by English teachers who teach young learners through online learning system, the challenges that the teachers faced, and the way that the teachers took to overcome the challenges. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the research were two English teachers, one local teacher and one native teacher of an elementary school in Surabaya. The data were obtained through observation and interviews. The findings showed that (1) the techniques used by the English teachers were games, pictures, storytelling, drawing, and songs. (2) the challenges that the local teacher faced when implementing the techniques were the internet problem and the learners’ focus/ attention in following the class. While the challenges that the native teacher faced were about the adjustment of the techniques for the online learning environment as well as in preparing the online teaching (3) The local teacher managed to overcome the challenges by preparing two sim cards to prevent the bad connection, and always trying to make jokes to gain students’ attention during the online meetings through Zoom. While the native teacher managed to overcome the challenges by trying to always be creative and flexible in implementing the techniques through online learning system, trying new online applications or websites, as well as spending some time to check again the online materials like PPT slides that were going to be used.
