Abstract

Literary works offer a sense of pleasure as well as human values. They teach people to love their own culture and to respect cultures different from their own. Literature varies in form. They may be in the form of fiction, play and essay or verse. In this thesis, the writer takes a form of fiction known as novel to be analyzed. The particular novel discussed in this thesis is one of Jane Austen’s, which entitled Pride and Prejudice. This thesis aims to reveal which characters represent pride and prejudice. Hopefully, this thesis will help others in understanding this novel in particular and other literary works in general. The writer makes use of plot, setting and character as the means of revealing which character represents pride and which character represents prejudice. Concerning the analysis of the characters, the writer discuses only two characters, which possibly represent pride and prejudice. The characters are Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. In analyzing the characters, the writer makes use of the working definition of pride and prejudice in order to prove that those characters truly represents pride and prejudice. In the analysis of plot, the writer analyzes the events, which are significant to her analysis. Starting from the exposition until the resolution. In the analysis of setting, the writer discusses some settings, which play important role in the story. In her analysis, the writer discovers that both Elizabeth and Darcy possess pride in them. However, Elizabeth’s pride is not dominant in her character unlike Darcy’s. Therefore, the writer comes to the conclusion that Darcy is the representation of pride and Elizabeth is the representation of prejudice.
