Abstract

An individual needs to communicate his idea to other individuals. In communication, an individual can deliver and get the message from other individuals. While delivering or getting the message, an individual must try to catch the meanings and the functions of the speech. If an individual does not know a speech function, he may misinterpret the message expressed by other individuals. Accordingly, he cannot reply the message properly (Kempson, 1986:47). In this study, the writer analyzed the speech functions of the main character in Burnett’s novel Secret Garden named Mary Lennox. She analyzed the speech functions Lennox uses in the social interaction, whether the addressee replied or did not reply the Lennox’s utterances with appropriate answers and a speech function that Lennox frequently used. This study was conducted to describe the speech function variations in the suspense utterances of the main characters. The method to analyze the data was content analysis (Ary, 1982:428) because this study focused on the content of Burnet’s novel Secret Garden. The findings showed that (1) Lennox used four-speech functions: referential, emotive, directive, and contextual functions, (2) the addressees usually replied Lennox’s utterances with appropriate answers, and (3) Lennox frequently used the referential function in her suspense utterances. As a conclusion, the author of the novel uses referential, emotive, directive, and contextual functions in Lennox’s suspense utterances in Secret Garden to show the conflict rises into climax. She mostly uses referential function in the form of getting and sending information in Lennox’s utterances to create the suspense. Based on the conclusion, the students of the English Department are given three practical suggestions on analyzing speech functions.
