Abstract

Literature is an art of writing by using human language. It means language is a tool to produce literature. In studying literature students can find many things, such as: human culture, human psychology and human values, and it will increase their knowledge and understanding. The writer takes drama as his study, because drama is a type of literature that can be read and performed. In drama students can find dialogues which can show the character’s emotional feeling. In drama, the theme is usually about our daily life issues in the society and it has moral messages. The writer chooses “Hedda Gabler” by Henrik Ibsen, one of the greatest plays of all time. It is a story about a complex character named “Hedda Gabler”. She is a character that dares to defend her freedom, faith, and status as a woman at that time, Victorian Era: a time when woman were restricted to do such things, even if she ends her life to defend it at the end. This study attempts to answer the statement of the problem: “What are the motivations of Hedda Gabler that lead to committing suicide?” To find the motivation of the main character that lead to committing suicide, the writer uses Abraham Maslow’s “theory of human motivation.” In conducting this study the writer uses qualitative method. He also puts some intrinsic approach as the elements of drama which are plot and character. The data are taken from Henrik Ibsen’s play “Hedda Gabler.” In line with the findings, it can be concluded that, basically there are two strong motivations that finally lead Hedda Gabler to committing suicide. The first one is, to get a freedom from the under pressured situation and a dead end of her life. The second one is to defend her honorable status as her father’s daughter and also as a woman, where she doesn’t want to live under someone’s power and lose her free will.
