Abstract

This research aimed to find out how the strength of debate in Debate and Public Speaking A Class can improve students’ speaking skills.The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method and the data collected by giving questionnaire and doing an in-depth interview. The sample of the research was the students of Debate and Public Speaking A Class which consisted of 16 students. The research finding indicated that the strength of debate technique can improve students’ speaking skills. It was proved in the questionnaire that consisted of the answers from 16 students and in-depth interview with 3 chosen students. From the questionnaire and interview, all students agreed that debate technique takes a role in improving their confidence to speak English. It was concluded that the students were successfully improve their speaking skills by applying the 5 strengths of debate technique based on Bellon (2020) which are critical thinking, debate teamwork, body language, problem solving, and applying debate technique in daily life.
