Abstract

Communication is one of the most important things in human's life. People communicate to transfer their ideas, thought, and feeling, in both oral and written. In oral communication they communicate directly, while in written communication they express their ideas, and feelings among others through literary products such as poems, plays, novels, or songs. Kennedy( 1976:v ) said that literature is just about anything written. He also add that literature is an art of words, help the people to become more sensitive to their own language which means that they have the ability to use words to express their own feelings, thought and ideas in a better and clearer way (Kennedy;1 976:vii). Because of songs have an art of words which known as lyric, the writer becomes more interested in analyzing it to know what beyond those lyrics. In this study, the writer chooses songs' lyric to be analyzed because they have been a part of people lives. The lyric of songs may have meanings beyond its words and they intrigue the writer to analyze it. This study is qualitative because it doesn't deal with numbers and it happens in a natural setting. In this study, the writer used content analysis as a research technique to analyze the occurrence of illocutionary acts within the lyrics of The Corrs' song. The writer analyzed the lyrics of the songs by using illocutionary acts and as the parameter he uses Traugott's and Pratt's theories. According to their theories there are six types of illocutionary acts. They are declarations, directives, verdictives, commisives, expressives, and representatives. The result of this study shows that representative always come up in each song with 51,9% of oceurrences. Meanwhile declaration does not exist in any song. Directive appeared 23,2%, verdictive reached 15,3%, commisive occured 5,1%, while expressive reached 4,5%. After analyzing the songs' lyrics and since there is a language function which does not exist in the song's lyrics, the writer suggests that the next researchers who deal with illocutionary acts have courage to analyze other literature products such as poems, plays, or novels. By doing that, the writer believes it can increase the learning of discourse analysis especially in analyzing dialogues or utterances in literary works.
