Abstract

Hypercholesterol is a condition characterized by high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Taro is a plant that contains chemicals such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins that can lower blood total cholesterol levels. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the antihypercholesterol test of taro leaf ethanol extract and taro tuber ethanol extract (Colocasia esculenta L) in mice (Mus musculus). Induction of hypercholesterolemia was carried out by giving quail egg yolks for 30 days to mice. Mice were divided into 4 experimental groups consisting of 2 treatment groups (treatment I and treatment II) and 2 control groups (positive and negative). The dose used in the first treatment was 200 mg/kg BW, the second treatment was 200 mg/kg BW, the positive control was given simvastatin, and the negative control was given 0.5% CMC Na. The results showed that the negative control group experienced an increase of 11.5 mg/dL. While in treatment I, there was a fairly high decrease of 25.75 mg/dL, in treatment II it also decreased by 18 mg/dL. The positive control group also decreased by 33.75 mg/dL. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that taro leaves can reduce cholesterol levels quite high compared to taro tuber extract.
