Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out what languages were mainly mixed and switched by different buyers, the Javanese levels used in the trading process for different buyers, and the reasons why the respondents did it. This study is based on the theory of Sociolinguistics that covers bilingualism, code mixing, code switching, language use, and Javanese language and speech levels. In this study, the writer used a qualitative design using participant observation. To collect the data, the writer used a tape recorder and a notebook to record the participants’ utterance. After that, the writer transcribed and analyzed them based on what languages were mixed and switched. Some of Javanese words found in the conservations, were identified as Indonesian based on the fact that those words have been listed as entries in Indonesian dictionary. After analyzing the data, the writer found that the language, which were mixed and switched among jenang sellers and buyers in jenang shop in PasarBaru Pare were Indonesian, Javanese Krama language, Javanese Madya language, Javanese Ngoko language, and a very small amount of Mandarin. The reasons in the mixing of codes were: it is easy for them to use it, it is used to express their respect to elder people and others, it is used to express ethnicity, it is used to express politeness it is the influence of the vernacular forms, it is used to express close relationship, it is used to express respect to elder people and others, it is easy to say, it is influenced by the age gap. The result in this study may not represent all of the people who have their jobs and shops in all parts of Pasar Baru Pare, nor other markets. Therefore, the writer like to give suggestion that the future researchers, who will deal with code mixing and code switching, involve more respondents of varying ages and ethnicities.
