Abstract

Communication is the most important thing in human's life. And language is the important means to communicate. In society, two people who come from different areas and have different cultures may speak different languages to express their ideas. Therefore, analyzing the conversation is necessary so that the speaker and the hearer can avoid misunderstanding. Basing on the reason above, the writer writes this thesis because she wants to understand the pattern of communication by analyzing speech acts. The objective of the study is to identify the forms and functions of swear words, which are uttered by young people in SLTPK. St. Stanislaus I during their conversation. This research uses the third grade students of SLTPK. St. Stanislaus I as the subjects. The data of this study, which had been collected by a tape recorder and a diary, were transcribed and analysed to find the forms and functions of swear words. Based on the data analysed, it is found that the swear words mostly used by third grade students of SLTPK St. Stanislaus I, Surabaya were (1) cuk (from diancuk) (2) jangkrik (3) taek/telek (4) setan. The main reasons why the third grade students of SLTPK. St. Stanislaus I, Surabaya use swear words in their communication were 1l ) to maintain relationship with their friend (2) to show surprises (3) to show anger (4) to show disappointment (5) to show disagreement. Although swear words obviously shock and offend many people, swear words have a hidden meaning which can express someone's feeling. By analysing swear words uttered by third grade students of SLTPK. St. Stanislaus I, Surabaya, the writer hopes that people do not have negative prejudice in hearing swear words.
