Abstract

This study concerns with the kinship terms of address for family members and relatives of Toba Batak speaking community. The writer is interested in doing this study because Toba batak dialect is the supreme dialect-dialect which is used in the larger society. Besides that, the writer comes from Toba Batak family and it is the strong point why the writer chose this topic. The theories underlying this study are: kinship terms of address, Batak dialect, Toba Batak kinship terms of address. A part form that, the writer presents the description of Batak tradition. This study is qualitative study that describes the terms of address for family members and relatives of Toba Batak speaking community. In order to get the data, the writer interviewed the four informants and recorded the speech using a tape recorder. She asked some questions, related to the terms of address and the underlying reason to use those terms. Then the writer transcribed and analysed these four interviews in order to find out the kinship terms of address used by the four informants. After that, the writer compared these terms with the original Toba Batak kinship terms. From the analysis, the terms of address in Toba Batak dialect used by the fourth informants are drawn and so is the interpretation of the findings. This study shows that the terms of address in Toba Batak dialect are based on generation and sex. Besides, there is no difference terms in addressing the family members and relatives from both sides of parents expect for addressing father’s older and younger sister, father’s older and younger sister’s husband, mother’s older and younger brother, and mother’s older and younger brother’s wife. There are also additional terms used, that is “angkang” and “anggi”. In other words, the terms of address used by family members and relatives of Toba Batak Speaking Community are the same in forms but differ in the person referred to. Based on the findings, the writer suggests the next researchers to take the interesting things from this study to be further studied.
