Abstract

Communication both spoken and written is very essential in our daily life for sharing and expressing our ideas. It can be successful if there is a successful relationship between form and function of messages in it. In this case, literary work such as novel also need to be based with the successful relationship of form and function in its dialogues. To see how the analysis of the form and function in the novel of Budi Darma entitled “Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras)” meets its success. Speech Act Theory is used as the underlining theory in which it is conducted by two famous philosophers, John Austin and John Searle. They present three elements of Speech Acts that are constituted by an utterance, they are locution – the utterance itself and its corresponding meaning, illocution – the message addressed to the listener, and perlocution – the action expected both by speaker and listener. Furthermore, another theory is also used in this study conducted by Jakobson and Hymes, called as the Language Function Theory which presents kinds of functions performed by an utterance. This study is a Qualitative Research, categorized further as Documentary Analysis; therefore, it investigates the quality of relationship, activities, situations or materials of the novel. In this case, the approach of Discourse Analysis, Speech Act Theory and Language Function Theory are used to support the analysis. Since the novel of Budi Darma is about the daily real life happens in Surabaya, there are many psychological implication of the main character which can improve the quality of man, concerning with the human needs, life values, way of thinking and other kinds of psychological aspects. At last, this study is conducted as the contribution to the studies of Discourse Analysis in general and Speech Act Theory in specific to show that they can actually be related not only to daily conversation or any formal dialogues but also to literary works such as novel. And that they can be used to find the characteristic or the psychological aspect contained by a literary work. In that consideration, it is advisable for many sides, especially to those who deal a lot with the study of language to enrich themselves with any literary works.
