Abstract

This thesis analysed the code switching as displayed by Pastor Jacob in His sermon to the congregation of Gereja Injil Seutuh Indonesia (GISI) Pondok Daud Lombok. The writer collected the data by using a tape recorder. The data sources were then transcribed and analysed under the parameters of setting, participants, and function. The data analysed shows that the languages switched to and from by Pastor Jacob are from: Indonesian to English, English to Indonesian, Indonesian to Javanese. Javanese to Indonesian, Indonesian to Sasakese, Sasakese to Indonesian, Indonesian to Madurese, Madurese to Indonesian, Sasakese to English, Indonesian to Chinese, Chinese to Indonesian, Indonesian to Hebrew, and Hebrew to Indonesian, but the language which was mostly switched by him while giving the sermon was Javanese. The main reasons why pastor Jacob switched his codes while giving a sermon were: (1) Pastor Jacob’s inability to find the right words (2) the need to stress the meaning of some words in order to make the congregation get better understanding, (3) to do contextual ministry by sharing ethnisity. The writer realises that this study is far from perfect that’s why it is suggested that prospective studies on code-switching in Pastor’s sermons use more sophisticated instruments and procedures of analyzing the data.
