Abstract

Culture is common way of life. It is inherited from one generation to another. As one of the part of human life, culture is interesting to be analyzed deeply. Through qualitative method the writer analyzed Pearl S. Buck’s novel entitled East Wind : West Wind which can be summarized in a single question: “What cultural Contrasts are fund in Pearl . Buck’s East Wind : West Wind?” This analysis results in conclusive findings. First, the different position between man and woman that Western people admit is the same position between man and woman. By contrast, Chinese people consider that the woman position is beneath the man position. Second, in taking care of the children, Chinese people consider that the children should be taken care of by foster mother, but according to Western people, children should be taken care of own mother. Third, Chinese people admit the beauty of tiny feet for Chinese woman is necessary. In the other side, Western people admit that it would better if a woman does not bind her feet because it was not good for her health. As conclusion, through this analysis, the writer can see the cultural contrasts between two cultures, East culture and West culture, which are difficult to be unified.
