Abstract

English Department provides several laboratories to facilitate students in their learning. They are the Digital Language Laboratory, Multimedia Laboratory, Reading and Writing Laboratory and Self-Access Center (SAC). Among those facilities, the writer is interested to investigate one of them, the SAC. The writer wanted to know English department students’ perception on the SAC in Widya Mandala Catholic University. This study aims at finding outthe perceptions of English Department students of WMCU on the existence of the Self-Access Center. The research instruments of this study were a questionnaire consisting of 9 question and an interview. There are 4 questions using Likert scale which is a psychometric scale commonly involved in research that employs questionnaire, 2 questions using multiple choices abc, 3 questions with statement answers. The writer took 100 students of English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University to fill the questionnaire and 15 students for the interview. In line with the research problem, the questionnaire asks about student’s opinion about the atmosphere, the materials, the facilities, and the tutorial program at the SAC. The writer found out that the students’ perception was positive toward the existence of the SAC of the English Department WMCU. They said that learning at the SAC could improve their English language skill, the atmosphere at the SAC was comfortable, the counselors were able to help the students to learn well, the materials at the SAC met students’ need, the effectiveness in learning at the SAC was quite good. They admitted that doing the compulsory independent study materials which they could choose from the boxes could help them achieve better in their structure classes. Based on the students’ perception and the fact that the students could develop their motivation in studying English, the existence of the SAC is beneficial to the students study English better. Hence, the SAC should still be developed to suit students’ needs.
