Abstract

Fisiak, as quoted by Kwinarti, says that both similarities and differences may be equally troublesome in learning another language. It is the fact that both Indonesian and English grammar are quite different. One of those grammatical items that is different is the Degrees of Comparison. To know whether or not the students find difficulty in using the right form of Degrees of Comparison, the writer conducts a research on it at SMAK Frateran Surabaya. The subjects of this research is the fourth semester students since they have learned the degrees of comparison for adjective in the first semester and the degrees of comparison for adverbs in the third semester. Having identified, analyzed, classified and counted the errors encountered, the writer finds out that most errors made by the students are errors of substitution (52.78%), followed by errors of omission (19.4%), miscellaneous errors (14.09%), and errors of addition (6.3%). From these findings, the writer finds that there are 4 causes underlying those errors. They are ignorance of rule restriction, divergent phenomena, false concept hypothesized, language transfer, and over generalization. Being a case study, this study does not offer any generalization. Nevertheless, its findings informs that the different structures between the English and Indonesian degrees of comparison cause the students to have difficulty in using the right form of the degrees of comparison. Finally, the writer gives some suggestions on how to overcome the difficulty.
