Abstract

Literary works, so far, have not been appreciated by the students who learn English. They think that literary works are not related to education because the content, the story and the theme of literary works have no connection with their lives. Actually, to the writer’s opinion, literary works can contribute to education and relate with every one’s life. The writer chooses a novel The Metamorphosis and intends to discuss its major characters, and in particular, the protagonist. Further, he is interested in its story because those characters inside The Metamorphosis have experienced some changes concerning with the transformation of the main character. For those reasons above, he intends to explore the characterization of The Metamorphosis in his thesis. As far as method is concerned, the writer uses the analytical method. By using this method, he analyzes the characters of The Metamorphosis and his analysis is based on the Graham Little’s definition that the characterization emerges from basic characteristics, appearance from various points of view and place in the work. Having discussed the characters of The Metamorphosis, the writer, then, concludes that respecting to each other is really needed in a family life. This may help them live in a harmony. The discussion itself showed that the characterization of the story is quite important as it is complex and variant to read. Since literature belongs to the life aspects it is advisable that any reader should know the background of the literary work. In connection with the teaching-learning activities, the students are suggested to consider the class for enjoyment, without neglecting the seriousness of literature analysis.
