Abstract

This study examines the existence of code switching among the youths in Gereja Kristen Indonesia Pregolan Bunder Surabaya taking place in informal situations. As such, the objectives of this study are (1) to describer the language which is mainly used by the youths in delivering their message, (2) to describe the existence of code switching, especially the languages or codes used by the subjects being observed in switching from one code to another and (3) to describe the reasons of the existence of code switching. In collecting the data, the writer either records the conversations or writes them manually. There are seven conversations which are analysed under the parameters namely setting, participants, and topic. Based on the data analysed, the writer finds out that: (1) The language which is mainly used by the youths in Gereja Kristen Indonesia Pregolan Bunder Surabaya is non-standard Indonesian. (2) The language which is mainly code switched by the Youths is non-standard Indonesian to English. (3) The youths' reasons in switching from one code to the other is manifold. Among others are: to maintain the smoothness of the conversations’, to express group identity and solidarity, the lack of vocabulary in one language, to express the youths’ habit, and soon. The writer realizes that there are many shortcomings in this study. Therefore, it is suggested that: (1) The future researches of code switching are emphasized on formal situation such as in the youths' meeting. (2) The Subjects under study are taken from various family backgrounds. For example some subjects have Indonesian family background and others come from Chinese family.
