Abstract

Reading is the most important skill to master for the students who study English as a foreign language. The reading skill is a foundation of all intellectual progress and for the advancement of learning. Realizing the importance of reading, students should be able to comprehend the reading materials. Therefore the students should use a good technique to help them understand the ideas or main points of the reading material while the teacher just guides the the students. Teachers can use supplementary materials which will help to bring motivation in the language learning class. They can give short story, magazine, newspaper, drama, poetry, etc. In this thesis, the writer would like to know which one of SQ3R Technique and Rosenblum Technique gives better effect through short story as a supplementary reading material on the reading achievement of second semester students of English Department. In SQ3R Technique, students do not discuss about the difficult words but it directly discusses the content or ideas of the passage. And in Rosenblum Technique, the students get a list of the difficult words to help them understand the passage. But it can make the students just to pay attention to the meaning of the words, not the content or ideas of the story. They will lose the main points of the story. In this study, the writer does a study on the second semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala University at the academic year of 1995-1996 to know the effect of SQ3R Technique and Rosenblum Technique. Based on the research, the writer knows that SQ3R Technique has a better effect than Rosenblum Technique through short story as supplementary reading material on the reading achievement of second semester students of English Department.
