Abstract

One of the objectives of this study is to find and categorize translation according to the types based on Newmark's theory. This study is also intended to describe the specific causes that make the fifth semester students of academic year 1994-1995 of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University get many problems in their translation, although they have been studying English translation for about two semesters. Because of this reason. the writer wants to know further the students' translation ability based on Newmark's theory. Based on the above background, this descriptive study conducted in Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya has attempted to find out what types of translation are often used by the fifth semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University in translating an English non-fictional text into Indonesian and to find out the specific causes underlying the above condition. The subject of this study were the students taking translation II at the academic year of 1994-1995. They are distributed into 4 classes, and the writer takes only one class as the samples of this study. The total number of the sample is seventeen. In this study, the writer uses a descriptive study since the determination of this study is to find and categorize translation according to their types based on Newmark's theory. Each sent.ence in the translation is classified, whether they belong to word-for-word. literal translation. faithful translation, semantic translation. adaptation, free translation. idiomatic translation or communicative translation. Then the writer gives a test to the subject of This study to get the data. The writer gives an English passage to the students in order to be translated into Indonesian. After that, the writer analyzes the data collected by using check-list I and check list II to see categories of translation which are mostly used by the students in translating an English text into Indonesian based on Newmark's theory. The result of this study shows that most of the fifth semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University academic year 1994-1995 often used word-for-word translation among the 8 types of translation.
