Abstract

As human being we are always curious about others and about ourselves, we always ask questions about the reason of our behaviour or action. Literature is the expression of life and the representation of human action and experience. The writer is interested in analysing a novel in her thesis since a novel tells a long story and represents real life. The writer chooses Joseph Conrad's novel Lord Jim with consideration that Conrad's works concern with the social nature of man and he is well known for his realistic novels and plays. Lord Jim tells about a simple man with an idealistic and glamorous dream but shameful in act when he is in a real crisis. The novel tells reader(s) how a hero behaves in real crisis; sees what happens, what he has to do, when the ideal is indifferent with actual world and when it fails. For those reasons, this study tries to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of conflicts does the main Character in Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim deal with ? (2) What are the sources of those conflicts ? To answer those questions, a practical judicial criticism is applied in this study. The writer believes that to analyse literary work does not only to communicate but also to explain the effects of this work with respect to its subject, organization and technique on the critic of individual judgements. In analysing the novel, the researcher reads Conrad's novel several times to comprehend the story. While reading she also collects data from the story. The forms of the data can be in words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, dialogue or description. After that the researcher begins to do the analysis. The result of the analysis shows that there are two kinds of conflicts: External conflict which is classified.
