Abstract

In the modern era, English becomes popular in the world. Many people are interested in learning it. As stated in the decision of the Head of the Department of Education and Culture in East Java Province (1994:1), English is optionally taught in the Elementary School as "Muatan Lokal" which can be started in the fourth year of the Elementary School. The teacher is an important factor of the teaching and learning of English in the Elementary School (Suyanto 1995: 1). He should be active to develop the English materials because there are not enough materials for the Elementary Schools in Indonesia. In this study, the writer wants to give some supplementary reading materials for the fourth year pupils in the Elementary School. She tries to observe the reading materials taught to the fourth year pupils in the Elementary School and then give some supplementary reading materials to develop the reading materials to improve the teaching and learning activity in the classroom especially the reading skill. The supplementary reading materials are about: Introduction, Introducing My Family, The Things in the Classroom and Parts of the Body. They are given to the fourth year pupils of Elementary School in the first quarter. The allocation of time to teach these materials are about one lesson hour for each. The procedures for presenting the materials suggested for the fourth year pupils of Elementary School are organized as follows: pre-reading questions, whilst reading questions and post-reading questions. This study is a library research. The writer hopes that later somebody could do an experimental study to confirm that the suggested supplementary reading materials can improve the teaching-learning of English in the Elementary School.
