Abstract
This study examines the existency of code switching done by the sellers and the buyers in a Chinese bicycle shop at 35 Waspada Surabaya. The writer collected the data using a walkman tape recorded as the audio recording and a diary. The data taken were four dialogues in the real situation. Then the writer identified the languages usually switched by the sellers and the buyers when doing the transaction by differenciating the style of the printing. She also analyzed the data based on the parameters ( The languages used, participants, setting and scene, ends, act sequence, key, instrumentalities, and norms ) . Based on the analysis, the writer found out that the languages usually switched by the sellers and the buyers were Javanese into Chinese, Javanese into Indonesian, and Indonesian into Chinese, and Chinese into Indonesian. The other findings showed that the dominant factors that influenced the buyers and the sellers to switch the codes during the conversation were : (1) the languages used , (2) the setting and scene, (3) the participants, (4) the ends, and (5) the key. Since this study is limited in terms of the number of the subjects, the place where this .study was conducted, and the data used, it is far from being perfect. That is why, the writer would like to suggest that the next research about code switching can take more subjects with various backgrounds and the conversation taken place in a rather formal situation such as at a hotel, Plaza, and Mall. To study code switching in the various backgrounds and places would be more attractive to observe. Above all, that would be contribute much more to the work of sociolinguistics.
