Abstract

In this thesis, the writer analyzes the main characters in Macbeth. The writer chooses the study of characterization in a drama because most fictions are centered to the discussion of characters. And drama has the quality in character analysis. The methodology of this study is judicial criticism. The writer uses this criticism because the analysis of the characters covers the character interrelation and emotional background through the actions and dialogues. And to follow this criteria the writer applies Knickerbocker's procedure in studying characters. In studying characters of this play, the writer also applies the theory of characters. The theory includes the importance of character, its kinds, the revelation of a character, and method of characterization. Studying character in a literary work is always important and interesting. We can understand and learn more about various people and their characters throughout the story. The writer chooses a play of Shakespeare because he is a good playwright of tragedy and comedy and he has a great name in the world. His plays sometimes arise the readers' emotions and critics. Macbeth is one of his plays in which the characters symbolize ambition and a statement of evil. The writer chooses Macbeth because of the interesting story which always deals with people's life. Hence, the writer describes it in her study of the characters in Studying the characters of Macbeth, she realizes that ambitions can make human being blind. Shakespeare describes the characters by contrasting principles in each character. One character in the beginning of the play slowly seems to be worst and the other character seems to be better at the end. Those characters create the story in such a way that it becomes life like as the nature of human being. In conclusion, the writer finds that the character portrays the difference of character development between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
