Abstract

Based on “Keputusan Kepala kantor Wilayah Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Propinsi Jawa Timur 1994”, English optionally taught in the Elementary School as “Muatan Lokal” which can be started in the fourth year of the Elementary School. The teacher is an important factor of the teaching and learning of English in the Elementary School (Suyanto 1995:l). He should know and also try hard to achieve the goal of teaching English to the students in the Elementary School. In this study, the writer wants to know the teaching and learning of English in the Elementary School is. After observing the teaching and learning process at “St Aloysius” and “St. Angela” Elementary Schools, purpose and the use of learning English. They are not interested in learning English and even they do not care when their teacher is explaining the lesson in front of the class. In this study the writer suggests some teaching techniques that the teacher can use to teach English in the Elementary School. The teacher should motivate the students to learn English. There are some ways to motivate the students to learn English, make the students happy in learning English and so on. The writer realizes that this study is still theoretical, thus it is suggested that somebody could do an experimental study to see whether those suggested teaching techniques are effective or not.
