Abstract

A headline is an important part of a newspaper. It can be seen from how it is written: big and bold. Through a headline, journalists try to communicate to readers by giving a preview of what the article it represents is about. Therefore, it has to be written clearly to be understood easily. In communication, it is important to follow the Cooperative Principle so that the information given is informative, clear, and relevant to the receiver. This study aims to investigate whether headlines on the online Jakarta Post on Politics follow Grice’s Maxims. There are three maxims that are analyzed in this study, maxim of quantity, maxim of manner, and maxim of relevance. This study can be significant for journalism field since it analyzes newspaper. It can also be useful in education field especially in writing field related to news item. This study is a qualitative study which analyzes 41 headlines on Politics taken from www.thejakartapost.com in December 2015. The data are analyzed using the Cooperative Principle theory. They are put in a table that contains the headlines and the three maxims analyzed in this study. After the analysis of the data, it was found that most of the headlines on Jakarta Post on Politics still follow the Grice’s Maxims. One violation of maxim of quantity and maxim of relevance was found. The most violations happen to maxim of manner for the headlines are ambiguous and obscure.
