Abstract

Character building is one of the important aspects to build students' character in schools. The need of character building is very important to be applied in education. Values education which covers character, values, norm, and morals helps students realize, experience, and put an integral manner to their life. In education, textbooks are important because they can determine not only what will be taught but also how it will be taught. The study was conducted to analyze and identify the images and linguistic units in When English Rings a Bell Grade VIII English textbook which was developed by the Ministry of National Education whether they contained character building values. The researcher limited the character building values by selecting eighteen values of character that were being the source of data that were identified. This is a descriptive qualitative analysis method which used content analysis. To do this research, the data were selected by sorting and coding them. The main research instrument was the character building indicators. The researcher was helped by a coreader to find and analyze the data. The representation of eighteen values of character in When English Rings a Bell English textbook was classified into pictorial data and linguistic units. This textbook only presents sixteen character values in nine chapters in the form of images, sentences, conversations, monologues, opinions, discussions and short expressions. There are two values that cannot be found in the selected textbook. They are tolerance value and discipline value. It is found that three chapters do not present character values. There are only three chapters which contain images about character values. Character building values that were not found were tolerance value and democracy value. It is recommended to the teachers to emphasize which values that need to be explained more and values that are not found in the whole units such as tolerance and democracy value. Although there is no image or linguistic units showing about those two values, teachers can present the values verbally.
