Abstract

News has always played an important role in human's life. People need news in order to know what is happening in their world whether it is locally, nationally, or internationally. One of the ways to get news is by reading newspaper. Newspaper is one of the print media which provide readers with many kinds of news, such as criminal news, sports news, political news, and economics news. Newspaper is read by a lot of people who have different educational background. It means that the newspaper readers have different ability in understanding the content of the news. A person who has a good educational background would be able to understand the news better than a person who does not have a good educational background. In this case, the journalist is challenged to write news which could be understood by all readers with different language competence. The journalist must pay special attention to the grammar and diction used in the news. The journalist must also be able to write his news clearly, meaningfully, and coherently in order to fulfill the readers' expectations. Moreover, the journalist should also give adequate information to the readers. The information given should not be too short or too long. It should be in the balance proportion. Furthermore, the headlines of the news need to be relevant to its content. Based on the reasons above, the writer is interested in analyzing the headlines and news in Metropolis columns of Jawa Pos newspaper based on Grice's maxim of manner, maxim of quantity, and maxim of relevance. The writer took eight criminal news randomly to be analyzed in detail. The data of this research, however, were collected from the respondents' opinion which were written in the questionnaires. The result of this study, however, indicated that the criminal news of Metropolis column of Jawa Pos newspaper adhered to the maxim of manner. The headlines of the criminal news in Metropolis column of Jawa Pos newspaper were also proven to follow the maxim of relevance. On the other hand, maxim of quantity was the only rule which was violated by the criminal news of Metropolis column of Jawa Pos newspaper.
