Abstract
The writer finds out that most of SMU students utter swear words in their daily conversation and it motivates the writer to study the swear words mostly uttered by the students and why they are using it. For the observation, the writer uses the students of SMUK Ignatius Slamet Riyadi on Jalan Untung Suropati, Bojonegoro. The writer in her study uses sociolinguistics theories consist of style of speech, power and solidarity, taboo words, and swearwords. In collecting the data, the writer uses a tape recorder, a cassette, and a notebook to write down the heard conversation. This study is analized under the parameters, namely: participant, time, place, topic, and the way they do the conversation. Based on the data analyzed, it is found that the swear words mostly uttered by the subjects are (1) picek, (2) diancuk, (3) diamput, (4) gendheng, (5) edan. The main reason why the students utter swear words when they are having conversations are (1) the participants are close friends, (2) the topics are daily topics, (3) the settings are informal, (4) to show annoyance, (5) to show desperation, (6) to show anger, (7) to show amazement. The writer believes that this study is far from perfect as there are likely several shortcomings in terms of its scopes, instruments, procedures of analyzing the data, findings, and interpretations. So, it is suggested that future researcher will do better studies and do prospective studies on swearing words with more variations of swear words from other region, sophisticated instruments and procedures of analyzing the data.
