Abstract

There are main books in the Bible, the Old Testament and the New Testament. Beside that, there are also many versions of the Bible. Many people think that the content of the Old Testament of the Bible most1y are poetry, especially the Psalms. According to Metzger's opinion (1993: 598) that close to one-third of Old Testament is poetry. Another expert, Capps (1971: 158), also wrote that when the early English translator labored with ancient Bible transcripts, they did not suspect that much of the book was poetry. The purpose of this study is to analyze and translate the imagery and figurative language to find the meaning of the book of Psalms written by King David in New International Version. Imagery is a part of Figurative Language. There are some aspects of literature, they are: poetry, basically brings emotive and imaginative experience. Sanders (1945:6-10} showed characteristics of a good poem. First, the presence of an imaginative element, the second is the presence of the emotional elements. The third is emphasis on beauty. The fourth characteristic is universality. Another characteristic of poetry is sincerity. The last characteristic of poetry is restraint. Imagery, according to Stageberg (1952:55) there are some kinds of Imagery, they are Visual imagery is surely using the sense of sight. Auditory imagery is the mental reproduction of sound; and it is used in poems frequently. Olfactory imagery, refers to smell. Gustatory imagery, refers to taste. Tactile imagery, refers to touch. Figurative language is a kind of language that is used in poetry. Here are some of the figure of speech: Simile and Metaphor, Personification, Metonymy, sometimes two special forms of metonymy are distinguished: Synecdoche, Autonornasia.Other kinds of figure of speech, hyperbole or overstatement,Understatement, Paradox, Irony, there are three kinds of Irony, they are: verbal irony, dramatic irony, irony of situation or situational irony. The last kinds of figurative language are: Symbol, it is also divided into three kinds, they are:Universal symbols, Cultural symbols, Nonce symbols. The imagery and figurative language are found in psalms 27 verse 7-12, 108 verse 1-5, and 119 verse 38-42. In these three psalms, King David, the psalmist, are using the imagery words that can draw the reader's imagination. To give deeper meanings for the psalms, King David also uses the figurative language. In the imagery theories, David mostly uses two kinds of imageries, they are: auditory imagery and visual imagery. While in the figurative language theories, David mostly uses metonymy, Irony of situation, personification, metaphor, and overstatement or hyperbole.
