Abstract

Literature begins in the creative possibilities of human language and the desire of human beings to use their language creatively. It means, language is the tool of human in creating literature. By studying literature, the readers can develop our intellectual and emotional skill Besides that, literature also enriches their capacity for understanding and communication. Drama is the part of the literature that the writer is interested in. The writer feels that the interaction between the person in drama is more alive than the other forms of literature such as story, novel, or poem. Thus, she takes a character study because it is the character who plays the important role in drama and who brings the message of the play from the author to the readers or audiences. In this study the writer takes Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof because the writer feels that this play is very interesting and challenging to analyze. This plays reflects about the reality of life. The reality about the pressure that a man has to bare facts when he gets some problems in his life. He must solve all of his problems with his families and his wile by himself. In conducting a character study on Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the writer uses literary analysis to conduct he research in order to complete understanding of the play. Thus, the writer focuses her study on the character found in the play especially the main character who has some problems and how he solves all of his problems. In conclusion, the findings of this thesis shows that the main character, Brick, has three kinds of problems: his spealing style unaccepted by his father, his unaccepted toward his mother's behaviour and his brother and sister in law's jealousy toward him. Knowing that, the problems bother his life and he tries to solve them by communicating with all of his family's member as well as possible. Based on the finding that the writer found in Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, we can learn an important lesson about the reality of life when we get some problems in our daily life and also how we can solve our problems as well as we can.
